ACUHO-I recognizes outstanding service.

You can make a significant contribution to ACUHO-I through your nomination of a deserving individual who has served the association and the housing field. The nomination process is your opportunity to honor those who have given of themselves and their talents to better our profession.

ACUHO-I  Awards and Criteria

The ACUHO-I Award

The ACUHO-I Award constitutes the highest recognition by the Association of a person (member) who has made an outstanding contribution to ACUHO-I and the field of housing and food service. Presented only after a person has retired or left the housing and food service field, the award is presented at the ACUHO-I annual conference. The award is intended to truly recognize distinguished service to ACUHO-I or through ACUHO-I contacts to the field of student housing and food service.

Presidential Service Awards
Each year the ACUHO-I president presents two awards at the annual conference. One is given to an individual who has contributed much to the association and profession and has done so with a minimum of recognition, acting as an "unsung hero." The second award is to a member institution that has provided exceptional support to ACUHO-I over the years.

Betty L. Harrah Journal Manuscript of the Year Award
The Journal Manuscript of the Year Award is given based on the quality of writing; organization in the design of the article; research methodology; significance to the housing field; educational value of the manuscript; creativity or originality of the approach; applicability or usability of the article to housing programs; and its overall contribution to the field.

Global Initiatives Award
The Global Initiatives Award honors the contributions of dedicated housing professionals who have contributed to furthering strategic initiatives of ACUHO-I and its aims of becoming a pre-eminent international association.

Criteria:

  1. Be a member of ACUHO-I in good standing (or retired past member) and have been an active contributor in advancing the internationalisation of the Association.
  2. Have presented programs addressing international housing issues at the ACUHO-I Annual Conference or at other venues; or
  3. Be active within either the ACUHO-I Global Initiatives Network or its predecessors; or
  4. Have planned and completed projects, articles, and policy statements that promote global understanding of housing issues; or
  5. Have been part of a U.S. or other International study tour as an organizer or host; or
  6. Have been an advocate and educator for internationalisation; and
  7. Have served as an active mentor and role model for non-U.S. members
  8. A description of how the individual meets the above criteria
  9. Each nomination must be supported by two additional letters of support

Preference will be given to nominees who are non-U.S. members; however, U.S. members who have made significant contributions to the internationalisation of ACUHO-I may also be considered. Nominees may not be current committee members or board officers.


The Herstory Award
This award honors the past Women Presidents of ACUHO-I and is presented to recognize an outstanding woman professional who has served the housing profession through courage, leadership, forging new paths as pioneers, honor, and commitment. This award is meant to recognize our past, celebrate our future, and encourage more women to lead our Association.

Criteria:

  1. Contributions to the advancement of women in leadership within ACUHO-I
  2. Be an active member of the Association
  3. Have made significant contributions to the goals of ACUHO-I
  4. Demonstrated dedication to the housing profession
  5. A description of how the individual has made a significant contribution to the advancements of women in leadership within ACUHO-I
  6. Each nomination must be supported by two additional letters of support


James A. Hurd Award
The James A. Hurd Award is presented annually by ACUHO-I to a member of color to honor and recognize outstanding contributions to our association and profession.

Criteria:

  1. Person of color who has consistently demonstrated a sincere interest and participation in ACUHO-I, its mission, programs, and educational focus
  2. Minimum of 10 years active or emeritus association with ACUHO-I
  3. Has promoted ethnically diverse members' participation in ACUHO-I by:
              (a) providing a vehicle for mutual support within the association
              (b) attending regional and annual meetings
              (c) presenting programs/events for the general membership
  4. Nominations may be submitted by any housing professional from a currently active ACUHO-I member institution
  5. The nomination form must include a description of how the individual has made a significant contribution to ACUHO-I
  6. Each nomination must be supported by two additional letters of support


James C. Grimm Leadership and Service Award
This award recognizes individual(s) who have assisted ACUHO-I with dedicated service and outstanding leadership, and devoted their professional time and effort to strengthening the goals and objectives of the Association.

Criteria:

  1. Must have at least 10 years of service with ACUHO-I
  2. Must have served on a minimum of three different ACUHO-I committees or task forces
  3. Must have been a chair of at least one committee or task force or a member of the Executive Board
  4. Contributions to ACUHO-I and the housing profession are judged to be beyond the normal service expected from persons in a position of leadership in the housing profession
  5. Each nominee must be supported by three letters of recommendation
  6. Individuals who submit letters of recommendation may not be from the same institution as the person submitting the nomination form
  7. Only one individual submitting a letter of recommendation may be from the nominee's institution


Judy Spain Award
This award was created to honor the contributions of a dedicated housing professional that mentored many staff and students throughout her involvement with NACURH and ACUHO-I. Also, Judy Spain’s unique personal journey is a source of pride for all Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) individuals and their allies. The nominees should have contributed to the GLBT community through activities and interventions that promote positive growth, development, and education of GLBT individuals and their allies.

Criteria:

  1. Be an active member of ACUHO-I
  2. Presented programs on GLBT or oppression issues at the ACUHO-I Annual Conference or other professional venues
  3. Actively served on the ACUHO-I GLBT committee
  4. Planned and completed proactive projects, articles and policy statements which promote greater understanding and acceptance of GLBT issues
  5. Actively participated at his or her home institution as an advocate/ally and educator for GLBT students and staff
  6. Served as an active mentor and role model for GLBT individuals
  7. Each nomination must be supported by two additional letters of support


Outstanding Corporate Friend Award
This award recognizes corporate individuals who contribute to our association and our profession. Many companies have a sincere interest in ACUHO-I beyond a profit motive. They help sponsor events, contribute to the Foundation, become sustaining affiliate members, and offer valuable insights and feedback on the direction of ACUHO-I and its activities.

  1. Minimum of three years association with ACUHO-I
  2. Must be a Foundation Corporate Partner
  3. Must consistently demonstrate a sincere interest and participation in ACUHO-I, its mission, programs, and educational focus
  4. Each nomination must be supported by two additional letters of support


Research and Publication Award
This award recognizes an individual who is or is not directly related to ACUHO-I, but who has made a significant contribution to the body of research and publications related to the housing profession. Nominations may be submitted by a housing professional from a currently active ACUHO-I member institution.

  1. Description of how the individual has made a significant contribution to ACUHO-I or our profession through research or publications.
  2. Each nomination must be supported by two additional letters of support


Robert P. Cooke Talking Stick Article of the Year Award
The Talking Stick Article of the Year award is granted based on the quality of writing; organization of the article; use of supporting documentation, where appropriate; capacity of the article to provoke thought; usability of the article to student housing programs or staff, and contribution to the student housing field.

S. Earl Thompson Award
This award recognizes an individual who is not directly related to ACUHO-I, but who has made a significant contribution to the college and university housing field through his or her efforts.
