Developing and Refining a Resident Assistant Training Program

Improve Your RA Training

New for 2012, ACUHO-I is introducing an online short course entitled “Developing and Refining a Resident Assistant Training Program.” This course teaches participants to review and refine their RA training programs using instructional and curriculum design methodology to ensure that time is spent most effectively in thought provoking and engaging activities. This course is perfect for the individual that leads an RA training team, but is also good for an entire training team to complete collectively.

There is no doubt that our Resident Assistants (RAs) are a critically important part of any college and university housing system. Given the importance of this staff member to the day to day functioning in any housing setting, it is surprising to discover there is often a lack of thoughtful, intentional training being developed for the RA. There is no doubt that student live-in staff members (resident assistants, community assistants, resident advisors, etc.) are key contributors in most college and university housing systems. Given the central role these staff members play in the day to day functioning of housing programs, it is vitally important that high-quality training be developed for them. However, many RA training programs consist of outdated content and delivery methods that are “re-used” from year to year and institution to institution. In most cases, conventional instructional design practices are not used, resulting in training programs that are not intentionally and thoughtfully tied to learning outcomes. As the primary educators of RAs, many entry level professional staff members may not have the time, resources, or expertise to create such training programs. Many RA Training programs consist of outdated and “re-used” material from year to year. Conventional Instructional Design practices are often not applied and the training is not tied to intentional, thoughtful learning outcomes.

The course will take approximately 8-10 hours to complete at your own pace and times. In that time, participants learn to identify gaps between current content offerings and the training objectives. Also, they learn to apply the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) process to the RA training schedule and presentations as well as develop an action plan if changes are needed. Finally, they will learn best practices in training and development and how to apply them to RA training.

Pre-registration for the course is open. Please note: we are taking pre-registrations - the course will open and be available to participants on February 20, 2012
.

The cost is $225, but ACUHO-I members pay only the $180 member-discount price. For more information or contact ACUHO-I Education Manager Lori Sobota at lori@acuho-i.org.
