Self-Assessment Toolkit for Hall Directors and their Supervisors

To reduce challenges associated with competency-based professional development planning ACUHO-I now offers the ACUHO-I Self-Assessment Toolkit for Hall Directors and their Supervisors.

This online resource uses competency-based self-assessments to help hall directors create professional development plans while assisting supervisors with coaching and support. When complete, hall directors have a model that helps them develop professionally; the supervisor has a tool for training, coaching, and mentoring; and the housing department has a process that provides focus on intentional knowledge and skill development.

A recent ACUHO-I survey showed nearly 53% of a housing department’s staff are hall directors. Yet, in the same survey, hall director supervisors rated themselves least effective at supervising professional development planning and using competencies in supervision.

With the ACUHO-I Self-Assessment Toolkit for Hall Directors and their Supervisors, professionals now will be able to:

  • Identify professional development priorities
  • Guide action plan development based on self-assessment data
  • Create consistency in understanding competencies and agreement in self-ratings
  • Self-assess current experience as well as job-importance of hall directors’ competency areas
  • Shift focus from paperwork to constructive conversations and coaching
  • Enhance the one-to-one meeting experience
  • Provide data for the individual and the supervisor
  • Use aggregate data of self-assessment ratings by competency area in departmental planning
  • Demonstrate department's commitment to furthering staff education.
