ACUHO-I
Standards
"The ACUHO-I Standards and Ethical Principles for College and University Housing Professionals" are a compendium of best practices all colleges and universities operating student housing are strongly encouraged to use. Written and revised by the ACUHO-I Professional Standards Committee, the standards are to be used to improve the quality of the post-secondary student experience, and the professional management of campus housing programs.

The four major components of the ACUHO-I Standards document are mission, functional areas, qualifications, and ethics. They are to be used for program evaluations, staff training, graduate preparation programs, communicating the departmental mission, assisting outside agencies, assessment, and self-studies.

Use of these standards is voluntary. ACUHO-I does not certify student housing programs, and university reaccreditation processes do not require compliance with these standards. The standards have been written in broad terms in order to meet the needs of ACUHO-I’s diverse membership.

Background Information

A portion of the standards statements in this document are adopted from the Council for the Advancement of Standards for Student Services/Development Programs (CAS) Housing and Residence Life Programs Self-Assessment Guide (1988, revised 2001). Other standards statements in this document have been adopted from the American Council on Education (ACE) Statement entitled, “Achieving Reasonable Campus Security” (1985).

The standards document contains both standards and guidelines. The standards provide a compendium of best practices that all colleges and universities operating student housing are strongly encouraged to use regularly. Guidelines are in italic font indicating practices and or policies that are recommended.

Questions, comments, and suggestions regarding the standards are welcome and should be directed to the chair of the Professional Standards Committee or the ACUHO-I central office. The committee conducts regular reviews of the standards and will publish revisions when necessary.

Application of Standards
Every other year the association hosts the ACUHO-I Professional Standards Institute. Held in the days preceding the annual conference, the institute covers further exploration of the standards as well as their application to campus housing departments. A full list of professionals who have completed the ACUHO-I Professional Standards Institute is available through the ACUHO-I online library.

While their inclusion on this list does not constitute an endorsement from ACUHO-I, these individuals may be considered if your department conducts an external review.

The ACUHO-I Professional Standards Committee has also updated its self-assessment guide for the standards. This tool will help institutions evaluate their work on a number of different categories and use that information to identify areas of strength and/or need for improvement. The document is available in the ACUHO-I library.

Oversight
The Professional Standards Committee reviews and updates the ACUHO-I Ethical Principles and Standards for college and university housing professionals and also coordinates the Professional Standards Institute. The committee is also responsible for creating the self-assessment guide that accompanies the standards.
