The Host Experience

The ACUHO-I Housing Internship Program host institutions benefit from an infusion of new staff who assist with training, conference management, special projects, program development, and more. There is no charge for ACUHO-I member organizations to post positions on the site.

  • Sign in to the ACUHO-I Member Portal.
  • After signing into the Member Portal, go to the Internship Host Registration product, add to cart, checkout, and complete the order process.
  • After registering, use the link below to log in to the system, post your positions, and begin the process.

Need to Know

  • Do not directly or indirectly make offers prior to Monday, March 4, 2024 (1 PM EST).
  • Give candidates a minimum of 24 hours, and up to 48 hours, if they request it, to make a decision regarding an offer.
  • Role model integrity for our candidates.
  • All internship offers and acceptance of offers must be made through the online system. This is critical so that the candidate pools and positions available are up to date for other candidates and hosts.
  • Only internship candidates who have been offered and accepted through the online system are eligible for the travel scholarship process.
  • Hosts may continue reaching out to candidates to apply for open positions. Interviews and offers are ongoing until positions are filled.

FAQs

As long as you are listed on the ACUHO-I membership roster for your organization, you will use your own ACUHO-I username and password to log in and create positions for your organization.

Internships generally last 8-12 weeks (mid-May through early August) but vary depending on the host institution’s academic calendar. A May-August intern schedule is not necessary. Host sites are welcome to work with interns to tailor specific dates to accommodate academic obligations and travel arrangements.

Any currently enrolled student (undergraduate or graduate) can apply. Those who are scheduled to graduate in December or May are eligible to participate in this program as well.

Interns often work 30-40 hours per week and have a wide range of opportunities, which may include serving on committees, developing publications, revising manuals, supervising summer student staff, creating programs, assisting with training development, and other site-specific responsibilities.

Hosts should feel free to be creative and tailor the projects to the particular intern based on what they have shared with you that they hope to learn or experience during their internship.

ACUHO-I requires that host sites provide their interns, at a minimum, with room and board (or its equivalent) at no cost. Compensation packages can vary significantly from institution to institution and are dependent on many factors; there is no standard compensation for interns. Whenever possible, many host sites will provide compensation packages that include parking, recreation center usage, health insurance, family housing, travel reimbursement, access to local transportation, and more.

After logging into the internship site, click “Internships” in the top menu and select “Past Internships” from the dropdown. Clicking on that link will display past internship descriptions shared by past organizations.

It is crucial that you ensure that fair, ethical hiring practices are followed. Please review the application materials and complete (as necessary) phone interviews. Please do not interview or select candidates whose materials are not listed in the internship database. Additionally, you are ethically bound to follow the timeline.
