“With the continued importance of disease prevention in high-density living environments, this data helps housing professionals benchmark their policies and align with best practices.”

Vaccination policies remain a cornerstone of health and safety in campus housing environments, especially as institutions navigate evolving public health guidance. The latest Campus Housing Index (CHI) report from the Association of College and University Housing Officers–International (ACUHO-I) offers a detailed look at how colleges and universities are approaching immunization requirements for students living on campus.

The 2025 report, based on data from the 2023–2024 academic year, reveals that while MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and Meningitis vaccines are the most commonly required, there is significant variation across institutional sectors. Private institutions consistently report higher vaccination requirements across all categories, including COVID-19, which remains a selective mandate.

Other key findings include:

  • Proof of vaccination is not universally required, with public institutions more than twice as likely as private ones to forego documentation.
  • Tuberculosis screening appears more frequently among institutions with larger international student populations.
  • Additional vaccines listed under “Other” suggest institution-specific health protocols.

This report comes at a time when the number of measles cases in the United States have reached a generational high and rising levels of vaccine skepticism.

Data collection occurs each year; institutions that complete at least 50% of the questions receive free access to the results the following year. Premium subscriptions are also available for purchase. More details about the CHI are available at https://www.acuho-i.org/campus-housing-index.
