NHTI 2025 will be held July 8-11, 2025 at the University of Washington. The Participant Application Process will open in November 2024.

The James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute – or NHTI for short – delivers a unique opportunity for ACUHO-I members to reflect on their experiences, focus on their professional development, and energize their commitment to the field. Hosted at the University of Washington in Seattle, NHTI is an intensive workshop for professionals like you who are committed to continuing within the campus housing field.

Individuals with three to seven years of full-time housing experience are invited to apply. Those selected will experience focused discussions in small group settings that allow for a careful examination of vital topics as well as the chance to form a professional cohort, which will pay dividends for the rest of your career.

2025 NHTI Faculty Application and Selection

The Association of College & University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I) is seeking members to serve as faculty for the James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute. NHTI faculty will bring their unique expertise and experiences to deliver the curriculum and mentor participants at the 2024 Institute, which will be held July 8-11, 2025, at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Faculty selected to serve at the Institute will be required to arrive on July 7 and will depart on July 12.

Why be a Faculty Member for NHTI? 

Being a faculty member for NHTI affords seasoned housing officers the opportunity to contribute to the field’s development by providing emerging professionals with a venue to reflect and plan for their futures in the housing profession. Twelve seasoned housing officers are selected to serve as faculty for the Institute. 

By serving as a faculty member at NHTI, there is opportunity to: 

  • Coach, network, mentor, and develop future leaders in our field. 
  • Share expertise in a specific content area. 
  • Serve the association. 
  • Contribute to thinking and action to help the campus housing profession embrace a future-oriented and sustainable approach. 
  • Learn from other expert faculty members. 
  • Network with other professionals from across the country and internationally. 

Criteria for successful faculty includes:

    • Exceptional facilitation and mentoring skills.
    • Understanding of adult learning models and their applications.
    • Expertise in professional development, training development, and delivery.
    • 12 years (required), 15 years preferred progressive experience in Student Housing/Student Affairs.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in multiple competency areas.
    • Demonstrated proficiency with presentations.

Selection of the faculty will attempt to ensure a diversity of expertise and demographics including:

    • Professional experience and backgrounds
    • Institutional type (small/large, public/private, etc.)
    • Geographic regions
    • Demographics reflective of ACUHO-I membership

Faculty are asked to contribute to NHTI in a myriad of ways to ensure the best possible experience for participants:

    • Faculty will support a cluster of participants. Faculty will have conversations about content discussed throughout NHTI, participants’ career trajectories, and overall experiences in higher education.
    • Faculty may serve as a conduit to highlight how topics are interconnected. Faculty will ensure participants understand the thread between sessions and relevance to future roles in Housing and Residence Life.
    • Faculty will peer-review sessions to provide feedback and consultation so that learning outcomes and association values are reflected in content sessions.
    • Returning faculty may serve as a role model to and provide support for new faculty before and during NHTI.
    • Faculty may present content sessions on the competencies listed below. Applicants will be asked to rank their level of expertise in each competency area on the application form.
    • Faculty meetings will begin in January 2025 and will be 90 minutes approximately every three weeks.  In addition, faculty must also be present for the NHTI Participant Faculty Orientation to be scheduled in for 90 minutes in late June.

The competency area sessions for 2025’s Institute include the following:

    • Leadership & Professional Development: Explore ethics and the intersection between personal growth, social identities, competencies, leadership style, and professional development.
    • Resources: Examine concepts of budget, facilities, and occupancy management.
    • Human Resources: Consider personnel management at the department level from on-boarding through progression including coaching and evaluation of exempt and unionized staff.
    • Belonging: Examine how culture, diversity, and belonging are critical to the success of housing and residence life, the institution, and higher education.
    • Assessment & Planning: Describe how to identify learning and other primary outcomes at the department and divisional levels and strategies for using data to inform practice.
    • Risk Management: Explore elements and application of enterprise risk management principles.
    • Politics: Examine power, influence, and authority in decision making processes and campus network of stakeholders.
    • Current Issues: Identify current issues facing housing and residence life, student affairs, and higher education.

    •  Applicants must complete the online ACUHO-I Common Faculty Application in full.
    • Applicants must submit a current résumé/CV
    • Applicants will respond to the following questions on the application form:
      • What skills, knowledge, and abilities have you learned throughout your career that apply to the faculty experience?
      • What is your experience in developing curriculum, learning outcomes, and/or training objectives?
      • Discuss your approach and experience as it relates to mentoring others.
      • What considerations do you employ when you are presenting to large groups to keep participants engaged? Provide some examples of how you have done this.
      • How do you ensure your work in all aspects of a faculty role is inclusive of others and creates an environment where learning about and valuing issues of difference is encouraged?
      • Why would you like to be considered for an NHTI faculty position?
      • What additional details would you like the selection committee to consider that were not requested of you in the application materials?
