Land Acknowledgement
We begin by acknowledging that the land on which Columbus, Ohio, is situated is the traditional and ancestral territory of the Shawnee, Wyandot, Delaware, and Miami peoples. The name “Ohio” itself is derived from the Iroquois word ohi-yo, meaning “great river” or “large creek,” referring to the Ohio River that flows along the southern boundary of the state. This river was a critical waterway for Indigenous peoples, serving as both a source of life and a vital means of travel, trade, and communication.
These nations, along with many other Indigenous nations, have lived on and cared for this land for thousands of years. Over time, their peoples were forcibly removed through violence, broken treaties, and displacement, resulting in profound loss and disruption to their cultures, communities, and ways of life. Many of the tribes who were forcibly removed from Ohio, such as the Miami, Delaware, and others, are now located in other regions, including Oklahoma and other parts of the Midwest, but their histories and contributions continue to shape this region.
As we reflect on this history, we recognize the enduring resilience and contributions of Indigenous peoples who continue to thrive today. We commit to honoring their history, supporting their sovereignty, and respecting the cultural legacies of the nations who once called this land home. It is through this understanding and respect that we strive to build stronger, more inclusive relationships with Native communities, ensuring their stories, rights, and perspectives are valued in our shared future.
