Residential College Symposium

The Residential College Symposium provides an opportunity for faculty and student affairs educators to expand their learning network, share knowledge, build community, and disseminate scholarship about the residential college experience. In 2024, the Symposium will be co-located with the ACUHO-I Academic Initiatives Conference in Portland, Oregon. Join us October 7-9, 2024, for an experience that will inform, engage, and inspire you.

This year, suggested topics include:

  • Best Practices for Searching for Faculty and Student Affairs Leadership in a Residential College. From intentional outcomes-driven searches to faculty members tapping their peers and everything in between. The search for the faculty lead or student affairs educator for a residential college runs the gamut. These sessions will touch on the process, practice, art, and science of residential college searches.
  • The Heart of the University: How Residential Colleges and Living-Learning Programs are Situated to Support Students in Coming Together in a Polarized World. Residential colleges as a space for collaborative learning and discussion. These sessions will dive into creating educational programs and opportunities for discussions.
  • Student Thriving & Flourishing: How the Residential College Experience Enhances Student Thriving, Belonging, and Builds Meaningful Relationships and Community.
  • Creating Inclusive Co-learning Environments Among Students, Faculty, and Administrators. Motivating and guiding students to co-create an inclusive living-learning environment that centers belonging and community.

Session types:

  • Traditional presentation: 45-minute presentation and 5-10 minutes for Q&A.
  • Panel discussion: 1-hour moderated discussion and conversation between panelists, or individuals with expertise or insight on the topic. Moderators are expected to guide the discussion and allow for audience Q&A.
  • Lunch and learn: host a 1-hour lunch table dialogue about the presenter’s research, program initiatives, or a discussion with colleagues.
