- Noon – Meeting the Moment and Finding Joy: Melanie Bullock Harris
- Working at a small college or university comes with unique challenges. Yet, amidst the demands of our work, there are moments of deep fulfillment, purpose, and joy. This session invites professionals to reflect on their “why,” reconnect with the meaningful aspects of their work, and explore strategies for sustaining joy in the midst of challenges.Through storytelling, discussion, and interactive reflection, we will uncover ways to meet the moment with resilience and rediscover the passion that brought us to this work. Attendees will explore the importance of purpose-driven leadership, the impact of celebrating small wins, and strategies for fostering positivity within themselves and their teams. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed or simply need a reminder of why you love this work, this session will provide inspiration and actionable steps to help you meet the moment with joy.
- 1 p.m. – Care Z College: (Re)Designing Care in the Community with a Common Agenda: Jillian Sturdivant
- As the landscape of higher education continues to evolve, so do the mental health challenges face by college students. Increasing rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues are emerging alongside the pressures of academic success, the influence of social media, and societal expectations. In light of these challenges, it is essential to assess the resources available at small colleges and universities and how we can develop intentional support for both students and staff. This session will explore the latest trends and opportunities for addressing these issues by fostering a common agenda.
- 2 p.m. – The Small College/University Resident Director – Challenges and Opportunities: April Chagoya, Ethan Scheck and Miguel Sosa
- The Resident Director position at a small college and university is truly unique; while the role provides the ability to wear multiple hats and develop strong relationships with students, the lack of resources and a smaller staff size can also pose challenges. In this panel discussion, we will learn from today’s generation of Resident Directors how they find joy within their work, and how their experiences can help us think of how to sustain these professionals for years to come.
- 3 p.m. – Earning & Maintaining Gen Z Students’ Trust: Isis Artze Vega
- Trust, the foundation of all healthy relationships, can be difficult to earn and maintain, particularly across layers of difference. This session will focus on differences associated with one’s generation, identifying the Gen Z traits that can help educators foster trusting relationships as well as those that can hinder trust. Strategies for generating trust will be shared and crowdsourced.
- 4 p.m. – Navigating Workload and Finding Joy: Small Group Dialogue (Entry Level: Airikah Cotton; Mid-Level:Amy Pounders; and Senior Level: Bob Beyer)
- Our final session for the symposium will provide an opportunity for participants to break into small groups by professional level (entry-level, mid-level, and senior-level) to connect within their perspective group and engage in dialogue about how to find joy within your particular role and function. Whether you’re just starting your career, managing teams, or leading an organization, it’s essential to reflect on how we can create meaning and satisfaction in our daily tasks. This session offers a space for honest reflection and sharing among peers, with actionable takeaways to cultivate positive, engaging work environment across all levels.
